Hi there,

I've recently started using VATSIM again and at the start forgot some of the things I'd learnt when I first joined. I don't think there is enough training material unless you look in the forums which people may or may not do.
I think for the casual offline simmer VATSIM is a big jump and there are lots of things to learn that we now have forgotten about if we had to start again. Not many of us have training in this area - it's mostly an odd hobby/passion :)

I've written this guide for the new person to VATSIM and specifically VATNZ to try and tell tell everything they need to know coming from the offline environment to the online one. So specifically I'm assuming they know how to fly their plane and have their sim already installed etc.

Hopefully I've covered most things, if you want to add/change anything please feel free. It won't be all correct and some things could be said better or might not follow VATNZ policies etc etc.

Also ATC, please read the transmissions as there are bound to be mistakes, incorrect information etc. As this is aimed at the first timers we may as well get everything correct from the start. Please note I have made some comments for some things so make sure to turn on comments.

You shouldn't have to have a microsoft account to view or edit this document, I've got Track Changes turned on so someone doesn't come along and delete the whole thing. If there are discussions you can reply to comments in the messages - just add you name so it doesn't just appear as Guest.
To edit the document click Edit in Browser.

Don't worry about formatting too much - this is just a staging area and I envision it will be displayed on a webpage after editing.

Brand new to VATNZ so read this with interest. Excellent info, could you add a bit about the process for unicomm if there are no atc on-line?

Thanks Nick, does this mean voice unicomm is not enabled? Or can I use voice backed up with text?

Hi there Ray, thanks for the info. Where would i find the TS address? I looked around and found a few older posts but not sure what is current?
Will try your suggestion for listening to atc, eventually would be keen to try controlling too, but probably best to get the pilot side sorted first?

Great guide for beginners, be nice to have that in the Pilot tab on the main website for those at entry level.

Thanks Mark, that's the idea. It can be hella confusing stumbling upon these sites with no real world knowledge and no step by step.
